Course Details

You have a great, first-hand story. You have a pretty good idea of the structure, plot, theme, characters. You lived the life, learned the lessons. You even put some of it on paper. You have a partly -- or even mostly -- finished essay, chapter, or book, but how can you get it polished and ready to publish?

Whether you have a jumble of chapters that need surgical attachment or a personal essay lethargic from anemia, this class is for writers who need help putting life, zest, and polish in their work before pressing the Send key to agents and publishers. This class will help you ready your manuscript for publication.

In this class you will:

  • Diagnose what's ailing your writing
  • Learn to love your narrator
  • Tone and firm flabby structure and style
  • Say it without saying it: cool narrative techniques
  • Learn the secrets of good dialogue
  • Overcome fear of success (that's why you're never "finished")
  • Write better beginnings and extraordinary endings

By the end of class, you will have:
A perfectly polished chunk of memoir (or two polished essays) with a clear set of next steps for finishing your manuscript and submitting it for publication

Admission Requirements:
Please send a letter of interest (including a brief work history) and a writing sample (less than 2,000 words).

"Kimberlee made me think and feel like a writer. Her comments and exercises helped me discover the essence of the story I am telling. I can see the book taking shape now, and feel I will be ready to propose soon." -- Heather Waghelstein

"Kimberlee brings life into what is often times the most difficult subject matters to write about. She is encouraging and positive, offering constructive criticism in such a way that it doesn't seem a bit like criticism!" -- Diane Singer

"I found Kimberlee to be incredibly insightful and helpful. She knew exactly what each of us needed to do in order to get our pieces to the next level, and she provided a great balance of praise and constructive criticism. -- Megan Auster-Rosen
