Course Details

This class will provide you with the skills necessary to begin earning your stripes as a fashion writer. Through insight into the fashion world and the fashion media, you will begin to grasp the different styles of fashion journalism and gain insight into -- and an understanding of -- the fashion industry.

Using trend reports, reviews of the collections, and looking at both the craft of fashion and the business of fashion, you'll learn how to tackle fashion stories from different angles. While we'll concentrate on high fashion magazines, we will also look at ways to get your fashion journalism published in non-traditional publications.

You will learn how to create a network of contacts, how to work with PR so that you get invited to press launches and fashion shows, how to secure interviews from designers, how to get ahead of the PR's to find the real scoop, and how to pitch editors.

Throughout the course, assignments will assist you in building a portfolio of spec clips that exhibit your ability to analyze and report on fashion.

In this class, you will learn:

  • How to get a grasp on fashion history and stay on top of the trends
  • How to watch shows, interpret collections, and develop an eye for design inspiration and trends
  • How to write everything from fashion credits to runway reviews to the start of a fashion feature
  • How fashion leads (and sometimes takes its cue from) popular culture, film and celebrities
  • How to use personal style to create stories that fashion features editors crave
  • The differences between fashion editors, fashion writers, and freelancers
  • How to write compelling pitch letters
  • How to critique your own work and function as your own editor

By the end of the course you will have:
A pitch letter for a fashion feature and a collection of spec clips written for a high fashion magazine and/or other publications.
