Course Details

This four-week course will put a spotlight on the sentence. We'll be examining and breaking down parts of speech and the elements of good grammar. We'll touch on basic grammar rules and common mistakes. We'll also address the basics of punctuation. We will refer to mainstream periodicals for examples. Weekly assignments will reinforce topics covered in class.

Some of the topics we will cover include:

  • Finding subjects and verbs, and making them agree
  • Effective writing
  • Who and whom
  • Who vs. which vs. that
  • Adjectives, adverbs, pronouns, and prepositions
  • Punctuation: periods, question marks, exclamation points
  • Ellipsis marks, commas, semicolons, colons, and dashes
  • Quotation marks, parentheses, apostrophes, and hyphens
