Children's books are the books we first fell in love with, and children can be the most enthusiastic audience you'll ever encounter. But writing for children is harder than it looks. The best children's books are as poetic, exciting, funny, and poignant as any work of adult literature.

This class allows students to develop a children's book from an initial concept to a dummy ready to submit to publishers. Writing assignments encourage students to focus their ideas and build their stories. Illustration assignments lead to creating an illustration portfolio ready to be shown to art directors. Weekly critiques inspire students to develop and hone their individual concepts and styles. The entire process of creating a children's book is explored, from searching for ideas, writing first drafts, making sketches and character studies, editing, and creating finished artwork and dummies, to writing cover letters and submitting the finished work to publishers.

NOTE: This class is designed for writers and/or illustrators. Applicants need not be skilled in both areas.

In this class, you will learn how to:

  • Explore your inner child to write fictional stories
  • Turn your ideas into a first draft and then into a finished manuscript
  • Go from sketches and character studies to finished artwork
  • Create pacing and flow in your writing and illustration
  • Create a finished dummy to submit to publishers
  • Create an illustration portfolio to submit to art directors
  • Write cover letters and approach publishers

By the end of this class, you will have:
A complete dummy of a children's book ready to send to publishers

To apply:
Please submit a letter of interest (including a brief work history).
