Course Details

Beauty editors are the do-everything glamazons of the magazine industry. One morning you may interview a big name actress about her obsession with liquid eyeliner, and then after lunch with a PR person, you spend your afternoon resolving the proper credit and caption of a new lipgloss. The perks are great (you'll never actually buy shampoo again). The hours are long. But beauty departments are all hands on, all the time. You learn everything -- from running photo shoots to writing and editing copy to going on market appointments, product launches and press trips.

In this course, you'll learn the difference between being a self-proclaimed "beauty-product junkie" and a discriminating beauty editor, how to find great interview sources, and how to make your beauty writing come alive and not sound like instructions on a shampoo bottle.

In this class, you will learn about:

  • What beauty writing is and how to get started
  • Writing captions and merchandise descriptions
  • How to make a press release work to your advantage
  • Edit tests and how to prepare for them
  • The different magazine, catalog and website voices
  • Beauty company profiles and histories
  • Generating ideas for beauty stories and writing your own item

By the end of the course, you will have:
A professional piece of work, a repertoire of formats and story angles that will get you through almost any assignment, and the ability to critique your own work and function as your own editor.

Admission requirements:
Please submit a letter of interest (including a brief work history).

The online classroom has several interactive components:

  • Instructors post lectures once a week. You can read them online, print them, or download them at your convenience.
  • Students post completed assignments for feedback and discussion by the instructor and class.
  • Weekly chats allow your class to get together via instant message. Transcripts are available for review if you can't attend.
  • Technical support is available from mediabistro.com staff.
